Ear Ringing: Causes and Symptoms

Ear ringing or tinnitus is when you experience unusual sounds in one or both ears. These noises are different for everyone and can sound like buzzing, humming, clicking, or roaring. The exact cause of tinnitus isn't clear, but contributing factors usually include hearing loss, stress, depression, anxiety, fatigue, and chronic headaches. Ear ringing can be mild or so severe that it impedes one's quality of life. Our ENT specialists at Cross Timbers ENT can assess your condition and develop a treatment plan to help ease discomforting symptoms. Reach out to our team in Midlothian, Mansfield, or Arlington, TX today.

Diagnosis and Treatment for Tinnitus

Tinnitus is diagnosed by meeting with a seasoned ear, nose, and throat doctor. Typically, a hearing exam and a physical assessment are performed to confirm the condition. From there, different treatments may be used to improve ear ringing. These solutions often include earwax removal, management of hearing loss, and treating an underlying illness, such as Eustachian tube dysfunction. In some cases, changing up current medications, undergoing counseling, and using noise suppression techniques can help.

Ear Ringing FAQ

What causes tinnitus?

Tinnitus can be caused by a number of issues, including:

  • Hearing loss
  • Wax buildup
  • Certain medications
  • Medical conditions and illnesses
  • Noise damage from loud sounds
  • Stress

Does tinnitus go away by itself?

In the majority of cases, tinnitus isn't a permanent condition and often goes away on its own within a few days or a couple of weeks. How long tinnitus persists typically depends on the root cause of the tinnitus.

Is there a cure for tinnitus?

Auditory nerve damage from medications, illnesses, or noise damage cannot be repaired — so "curing" tinnitus is a relative term. However, at Cross Timbers ENT, we provide a range of treatments that can dramatically lessen the impact of tinnitus, and some patients may even no longer notice their tinnitus after treatment.

How common is tinnitus?

Some degree of tinnitus is very common, with almost half the adult population in America experiencing a level of tinnitus.
